Priority Mail : Castillo de San Marcos Forever Stamp 2021

Purpose and Tribute:
The issuance of the Castillo de San Marcos stamp served a dual purpose: covering the priority mail rate while paying tribute to the majestic and historic Castillo de San Marcos.

Design and Artwork:
The stamp features a digital illustration of the Castillo de San Marcos, meticulously crafted by artist Dan Cosgrove based on a contemporary photograph. The artwork captures the grandeur and historical significance of this iconic fortress.

First Day of Issue:
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, there was no formal First Day of Issue Ceremony. However, the stamp received its inaugural cancellation from St. Augustine, Florida, the very site where Castillo de San Marcos stands, further cementing its historical connection.

Part of the American Landmarks Series:
As part of the prestigious American Landmarks Series, which began in 2008 with stamps featuring Mount Rushmore and Hoover Dam, the Castillo de San Marcos stamp joins a collection of vibrant images highlighting iconic American locations. These stamps, envisioned by digital artist Dan Cosgrove, offer a virtual tour of America's most renowned landmarks.

Historical Significance:
The history of the Castillo de San Marcos is as rich as its formidable walls. Established as the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States, it was designed by Spanish engineer Ignacio Daza and constructed on the western shores of Matanzas Bay in St. Augustine, Florida.

Over its long history, the fortress changed hands several times, transitioning from Spanish to British control, and eventually becoming part of the United States under the Adams-On's Treaty in 1821. Renamed Fort Marion during its time as a U.S. Army base, the fortress was designated a national monument in 1924 and renamed Castillo de San Marcos in 1942.

Distinctive Coquina Construction:
Not only is the Castillo de San Marcos renowned for its strategic significance, but it also features distinctive coquina walls crafted from tiny shells and minerals sourced from the nearby "King's Quarry" on Anastasia Island. This unique construction material contributes to the fortress's enduring beauty and symbolic importance in Spanish-American history.

A Lasting Legacy:
Standing for over 325 years, the Castillo de San Marcos remains a testament to Spain's enduring legacy in shaping the landscape and history of the United States. The fortress continues to captivate visitors with its architectural grandeur and storied past.
