Overview
The 2024 Love Series stamp features a timeless symbol of love, a white dove, and continues the beloved tradition of issuing Love stamps at the start of the year.
Purpose of Issuance
This stamp was released to uphold the popular custom of introducing Love stamps annually, a tradition cherished by many for expressing sentiments on various special occasions.
Design Details
The stamp showcases a digital illustration of a white dove composed of four geometric shapes, set against a vibrant red background with a pink envelope. These colors are traditionally associated with love. The original artwork was created by Katie Kirk.
First Day of Issue
Although there was no central First Day Ceremony, a local ceremony was held in Romance, Arkansas. This town is notable for being the first to issue the 1990 Love stamp and remains a popular destination for special Valentine??s Day postmarks and wedding invitations. Some couples even choose to get married at the Romance post office.
The Love Series
Inspired by the popularity of Christmas stamps, the USPS released its first Love stamp in 1973. Initially not intended as a series, another Love stamp didn't appear until 1982. Over the years, Love-themed stamps were issued sporadically and were intended for various special occasions, not just Valentine??s Day. In 1987, the USPS officially established the Love stamp series, with new releases nearly every year since. These stamps often stay on sale longer and are printed in larger quantities than most commemorative stamps, sometimes even requiring additional print runs to meet demand.
Historical Significance
The dove, a well-known symbol of love, has a rich history. In ancient Greek mythology, doves were associated with Aphrodite, the goddess of love, likely due to their monogamous nature and the shared parenting responsibilities of male and female doves. Another myth suggests that a nymph named Peristera was turned into a dove by Eros in anger but was cared for by Aphrodite, further cementing the bird's association with love. Doves frequently appear in art and temples dedicated to Aphrodite, symbolizing love and devotion.
This 2024 Love stamp, featuring the elegant white dove, continues to celebrate the enduring symbols and stories of love, making it perfect for a wide range of heartfelt messages and celebrations.
