Postcard: Sailboats Booklets Forever Stamp 2023
?
Purpose of the Stamp:
This stamp, along with its counterpart, the One Sailboat stamp, was issued in 2023 to cover the postcard mailing rate. Sailboats evoke the essence of summer vacations, making them a perfect subject for postcards.
Design Details:
The stamp features an abstract illustration of two sailboats gliding on a serene sea beneath a blue sky. The artwork, created by Libby VanderPloeg, began as pencil sketches and was finalized using Adobe Illustrator. VanderPloeg also designed the word "postcard" on the stamp.
Inspiration and Creation:
The USPS aimed to encapsulate the "joyful sensation of being on the water on a beautiful day" with this stamp series. The design reflects the tranquility and leisure associated with sailing, evoking a peaceful, carefree experience on the open sea.
Historical Context:
Sailboats have a long and storied history, with the earliest known sails dating back to around 4000 BC in ancient Egypt. The modern sailboat design, however, began to take shape in the late 19th century, thanks to pioneers like Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, who revolutionized boat building. Herreshoff initially focused on practical, work-related vessels before the shift towards recreational sailing.
Post-WWII Transformation:
Following World War II, sailboat construction underwent significant transformation with materials evolving from wood to fiberglass. This period also saw a rise in the popularity of sailing as a hobby, with boats measuring 25 to 35 feet becoming the norm due to their affordability and ease of use. These boats typically featured the Bermuda (or Marconi) rig, a triangular sail configuration that originated in Bermuda in the 1600s.
Enduring Legacy:
Many Bermuda-rigged sailboats from the post-war era remain in use today, showcasing durable craftsmanship and the dedication of their owners to maintaining these vessels. These sailboats not only represent a rich nautical heritage but continue to offer enjoyment and adventure on the water.
This stamp beautifully captures the timeless appeal of sailing, making it a delightful addition to any postcard and a reminder of the joy and freedom that comes with being on the open water.
