History the Stamp Represents: Henry Hank Louis Aaron (February 5, 1934 January 22, 2021) was a legendary professional baseball player who played for Major League Baseball (MLB) over 23 seasons, from 1954 to 1976. Most of his career was spent with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, though he spent two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers. Aaron played as a right fielder and designated hitter, becoming famous for breaking Babe Ruth's long-standing home run record in 1974. He held the record for 33 years.
Aaron grew up in Mobile and Toulminville, Alabama, alongside his seven siblings. Due to his family's financial struggles, Aaron used a stick and bottle cap as makeshift equipment to play baseball. After high school, he joined the Negro American League and quickly progressed to sign with the Braves. On April 13, 1954, he made his MLB debut.
Throughout his career, Hank Aaron faced numerous challenges, including instances of racism. He was often denied entry to hotels or restaurants his teammates attended. When he approached Babe Ruth's home run record, Aaron received death threats. Despite this, Aaron persevered. His dedication and talent made him one of the most respected and beloved players in baseball history.
