Muhammad Ali Forever Stamp 2026

The U.S. Postal Service honors Muhammad Ali (1942 - 2016), widely known as The Greatest, with a commemorative stamp celebrating his extraordinary achievements as a three-time heavyweight boxing champion and his lasting influence as a cultural and humanitarian figure.

Throughout his life, Ali was recognized not only for his dominance inside the boxing ring but also for his willingness to speak openly about his convictions. During a period when many African Americans were fighting for greater recognition and equality, Ali used his voice to challenge expectations, defend his beliefs, and inspire people around the world. His confidence, determination, and commitment to his principles transformed him into an international symbol far beyond the sport of boxing.

The stamp pane presents the designs in a checkerboard arrangement, featuring a black-and-white Associated Press photograph of Ali taken in 1974. USPS art director Antonio Alcal selected the image because of its powerful combination of personality and athletic identity. Ali's direct gaze, confident expression, boxing stance, and gloves capture the qualities that made him one of the most recognizable athletes in history.

The word ALI appears across the stamps in alternating dark brown and red tones, arranged from top to bottom. The design reflects different elements of Ali's legacy from the bold lettering seen on boxing posters to the movement and rhythm of his famous fighting style, as well as the enthusiastic crowds around the world who repeatedly chanted his name.

Creating a stamp honoring such an iconic figure presented a unique challenge. Alcal noted that the more famous a person becomes, the more expectations surround how that individual should be represented. Because Ali was one of the most recognizable people on the planet during his prime, the design needed to capture the many dimensions of his life and career.

The selvage of the stamp pane features another black-and-white Associated Press photograph from 1976, showing Ali dressed in a pinstripe suit. This image highlights a different side of Ali his role as an advocate, activist, and humanitarian beyond the boxing arena.

According to Alcal, it was important for the stamp to represent Ali not only as a legendary athlete but also as a person whose influence extended into culture, social issues, and global conversations.

The Muhammad Ali stamp celebrates the enduring legacy of a champion whose impact reached far beyond the boundaries of sports.
