Celebrate Forever Stamp 2011
Across the globe, festivities serve as moments of unity, where loved ones gather to commemorate various milestones. Whether it's marking birthdays, anniversaries, career advancements, or well-deserved retirements, celebrations encapsulate the essence of happiness and camaraderie.
The inception of the second "Celebrate!" stamp by the U.S. Postal Service stemmed from art director Phil Jordan's visit to the Museum of Neon Art in Los Angeles. Captivated by the dynamic imagery and vibrant hues, Jordan embarked on what he termed a "monumental challenge." Despite the daunting task ahead, he remained confident that the outcome would be nothing short of spectacular.
In his quest for the perfect design, Jordan enlisted the expertise of fine artist Michael Flechtner, whose inspiration blossomed from the brilliance of a fireworks spectacle. Reflecting on his creative process, Flechtner remarked that fireworks, with their kaleidoscope of colors, luminosity, and motion, epitomized the essence of celebration.
Crafting a masterpiece measuring 34" by 44", Flechtner meticulously heated glass tubing to a scorching 1400 degrees Fahrenheit, skillfully bending them into intricate lettering and explosive fireworks shapes. Employing neon gas for a radiant red-orange hue, and utilizing a blend of argon, mercury, and phosphor coatings for other vibrant colors, Flechtner orchestrated a symphony of luminosity that culminated in one of the most dazzling U.S. stamps ever issued. With its neon glow capturing the spirit of jubilation and the spectacle of a fireworks display, the stamp radiates exuberance and festivity.
