Commemorating Nature's Winter Resilience
This stamp collection celebrates winter flowers with ten unique designs, each showcasing a different species that blooms in late winter or early spring, bringing vibrant colors back into the world during the coldest months.
Purpose of Issuance
These stamps were issued to honor the flowers that defy the harshness of winter and bring hope and color as the seasons transition from winter to spring.
Stamp Designs
The stamps feature hand-sketched and oil-painted images by artist Gregory Manchess, capturing the beauty and resilience of these winter blooms.
First Day City
Although there was no formal First Day of Issue Ceremony, the First Day of Issue cancellations were from Guilford, Indiana, known for being the home of Breck's, the largest importer of Dutch tulip bulbs in the United States.
Historical Context
While most flora lie dormant during the winter months, certain species flourish despite the cold and snow. The 2022 United States Postal Service issued a set of ten Forever stamps depicting flowers that thrive in winter conditions. These stamps feature: camellia, winter aconite, crocus, hellebore, winterberry, pansy, plum blossom, grape hyacinth, daffodil, and ranunculus.
Many of these flowers, which bloom in late winter or early spring, need to be planted the previous fall. Other popular winter-blooming species include snowdrops, queen of the night tulips, winter jasmine, pieris, cyclamen, witch hazel, English primrose, glory of the snow, and spring snowflake. These plants often require a period of cold to trigger their blooming cycle, and in warmer climates, they may need to be chilled artificially to simulate winter conditions.
Gardening Tips for Year-Round Blooms
Planning a garden that blooms all year long, including in winter and early spring, can be an exciting project. To determine the best plants for your garden, first identify your United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) hardiness zone. Once you know your zone, visit your local nursery for recommendations on suitable plants. With the right planning, you can enjoy beautiful blooms throughout the year, making winter feel shorter and more vibrant.
This collection of stamps not only celebrates the beauty of winter flowers but also encourages gardeners to appreciate and cultivate these hardy plants that brighten even the coldest days.
