Blooming Connections: The 2020 Chrysanthemum Global Forever Stamp
Continuing the tradition of the iconic round Global Forever stamps, the 2020 Chrysanthemum edition emerges as a symbol of international connectivity and timeless elegance.
Graced with the delicate allure of a pink chrysanthemum against a pristine white backdrop, this stamp serves as a testament to the universal appeal of the flower, which thrives in gardens across the globe. The captivating photograph, captured by the talented Hong Vo, immortalizes the chrysanthemum's radiant beauty and cultural significance.
Originally slated for a grand debut at the WESTPEX Stamp Show in Burlingame, California, the First Day of Issue Ceremony was regrettably canceled due to the prevailing challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, the stamp's release resonates with the spirit of resilience and interconnectedness that transcends borders.
The chrysanthemum, affectionately known as "mums," holds the distinction of being the most commercially cultivated flower in the United States, earning the esteemed title of the "Queen of Fall Flowers." However, its allure extends far beyond American shores, with diverse cultural interpretations and symbolic meanings woven into its petals.
With roots tracing back to ancient China, where it first bloomed around the 15th century BC, the chrysanthemum journeyed across continents to Japan, where it became a revered emblem of happiness, longevity, and imperial lineage. In the United States, chrysanthemums adorn autumnal landscapes, offering a kaleidoscope of colors and enduring beauty amidst cooling temperatures.
Beyond its ornamental charm, certain varieties of chrysanthemums find culinary utility, with dried flowers enriching teas and tender leaves imparting subtle flavors to savory dishes, particularly in Chinese and Japanese cuisines.
In bestowing the chrysanthemum with the honor of gracing the Global Forever stamp, the USPS pays homage to a flower whose timeless allure transcends boundaries, forging connections and spreading joy across the world.
