Emilio Sanchez Forever Stamp 2021

The U.S. Postal Service celebrates the artistic legacy of Emilio Sanchez (1921 -1999), an acclaimed painter and lithographer known for transforming architecture into powerful studies of light, shadow, and geometric form. Through his distinctive style, Sanchez created works that reflected both his Cuban roots and his many years living and working in New York City.

The Emilio Sanchez stamp pane contains 20 stamps featuring four of the artist's architectural compositions: Los Toldos (1973), Ty's Place (1976), En el Souk (1972), and Untitled (Ventanita entreabierta) (1981).These selections showcase Sanchez's ability to find beauty in everyday structures by reducing them to their essential visual elements.

Sanchez's architectural paintings and lithographs occupy a space between realism and abstraction. Rather than creating exact architectural records, he interpreted buildings through his own artistic perspective. His compositions often focus on a single structure, removing unnecessary surroundings and concentrating attention on key features such as balconies, arched entrances, or decorative railings. Through carefully controlled contrasts between intense sunlight and dramatic shadow, Sanchez revealed the underlying shapes and patterns of each building while preserving its unique character.

Throughout his career, Sanchez drew inspiration from a wide range of locations. His early works featured homes and structures from Mexico, the Caribbean, and the United States, where he became a naturalized citizen in 1968. Among all his subjects, Cuban architecture held a particularly important place in his imagination, with its distinctive combination of Victorian influences, colonial traditions, and rural styles.

During the 1970s, Sanchez expanded his artistic exploration beyond the Americas, creating works inspired by architecture in Morocco and other Mediterranean regions. In later decades, the urban landscape of New York City became an increasingly important source of inspiration, appearing more frequently in his artwork during the 1980s and 1990s.

By focusing on the relationship between architecture, light, and space, Sanchez transformed ordinary buildings into elegant compositions that emphasized structure, atmosphere, and emotion.

Antonio Alcal served as art director and designer for the Emilio Sanchez stamp pane.

The Emilio Sanchez stamps are issued as Forever stamps, meaning they will always maintain the same value as the current First-Class Mail one-ounce postage rate.
