Save Manatees Forever Stamp 2024

$37.99 – $500.00

Why the stamp was issued: To raise awareness of the threats facing the West Indian manatee, caused by both human activity and environmental changes.

About the stamp design: The stamp features a digital illustration of a manatee swimming underwater, created by artist Nancy Stahl.

First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony took place on Manatee Appreciation Day at Silver Springs State Park in Florida, known for its manatee population.

History: Manatees are large marine mammals, weighing up to 1,300 pounds and measuring up to 13 feet long. They have paddle-like tails and flippers, and are slow-moving. The West Indian manatee, one of three species (along with the Amazonian and West African manatees), lives mostly in Florida.

Threats: Manatees face significant dangers from habitat destruction, climate change, and human activities. Nonprofit organizations like Save the Manatee Club (SMC) work to protect them by spreading awareness and supporting rescue efforts.

How you can help: Simple actions, like slowing down while boating (propeller strikes are a major cause of injury), giving manatees space while swimming, and avoiding contact or feeding them, can make a difference. If you see an injured manatee in Florida, contact Save the Manatee Club. By following these guidelines, we can help protect manatees from extinction.
