Bruce Lee Forever Stamp 2026

The U.S. Postal Service honors Chinese American martial artist, actor, and filmmaker Bruce Lee (1940 - 1973) with a commemorative stamp celebrating a cultural icon whose influence extends far beyond the world of cinema. Through his extraordinary martial arts ability, magnetic personality, and groundbreaking film career, Lee became a global figure who transformed perceptions of Asian representation in entertainment and helped shape action films, popular culture, and modern mixed martial arts.

Bruce Lee became the first Asian leading man in American film, challenging long-standing stereotypes about Asian performers in Hollywood. His first major American breakthrough came through the television series *The Green Hornet* (1966 - 1967), where he portrayed Kato, the martial arts expert and partner of the show's main character. Although he later worked as a fight choreographer and appeared in additional television productions, he struggled to secure leading roles because Asian characters were often portrayed as secondary figures and studios doubted that Asian actors could carry major films. Lee was determined to change that perception.

At the same time, Lee was developing a revolutionary approach to martial arts philosophy. Through Jeet Kune Do, meaning approximately The Way of the Intercepting Fist, he rejected strict adherence to traditional systems and promoted a more adaptable, practical, and personal method that emphasized freedom of movement and continuous improvement.

While opportunities in Hollywood remained limited, Hong Kong's Golden Harvest Studios offered Lee the opportunity to demonstrate his full potential as a leading action star. His first major success, *The Big Boss* (1971), became a box office sensation in Hong Kong, throughout Asia, and eventually in the United States. He followed this achievement with *Fist of Fury*, another highly successful film that established him as an international star.

Lee then expanded his creative role by producing, directing, writing, and starring in *The Way of the Dragon* (1972), a film that broke box office records in Hong Kong. While working on his next project, *The Game of Death*, Lee paused production after Warner Bros. offered him the opportunity to headline the studio's first major film starring him. The result was *Enter the Dragon*, widely regarded as the definitive Bruce Lee film. Featuring unforgettable action sequences and the famous final battle against villain Han in a mirrored room, the movie became a worldwide phenomenon.

Tragically, Bruce Lee never experienced the full impact of his greatest film. On July 20, 1973, just one month before the release of *Enter the Dragon*, Lee died at the age of 32 from cerebral edema. Despite his brief life and career, his influence continued to grow, inspiring generations of performers, athletes, and fans around the world.

For the stamp design, USPS art director Antonio Alcal sought an artist capable of accurately capturing Lee's legendary flying kick pose. After receiving recommendations from fellow art directors, Alcal selected artist Kam Mak, whose lifelong admiration for Bruce Lee made him especially suited for the project.

Mak welcomed the opportunity but recognized the artistic challenge. He noted that finding a photograph showing Lee performing the flying kick with sufficient facial detail proved difficult. To assist the project, USPS provided a collection of reference images and arranged for an expert martial artist to recreate the movement, producing detailed photographs that helped guide Mak's work. Having emigrated from Hong Kong as a child, Mak also studied Lee's films extensively, explaining that this process was essential to understanding and capturing Lee's unique presence, personality, and movement.

The final stamp artwork features Mak's black-and-white painting of Bruce Lee performing his famous flying kick. Created with egg tempera on traditional gesso, the portrait is paired with a bold yellow brushstroke background inspired by the iconic yellow tracksuit Lee wore in *The Game of Death*, a film completed and released after his passing. The design places the words BRUCE LEE and USA FOREVER vertically along the right side, angled as though Lee's powerful kick is breaking through the lettering. Alcal explained that the dynamic arrangement reinforces the sense of motion and energy, creating a design he believed Lee himself would have appreciated.

The Bruce Lee stamp is issued as a Forever stamp, ensuring it will always remain equal in value to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce postage rate.
