James Webb Space Telescope Forever Stamp 2022
Celebrating the James Webb Space Telescope: A New Era in Space Exploration
This stamp honors the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and its potential for groundbreaking discoveries in space exploration.
Purpose of the Stamp:
Issued to commemorate NASA??s launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, the largest and most advanced telescope ever deployed in space. The JWST was launched on December 25, 2021.
Stamp Design:
The stamp features an artist??s depiction of the James Webb Telescope set against a backdrop of stars. The selvage includes a photograph of a star taken by the telescope early in its mission. The artwork was created by James Vaughan.
First Day of Issue Ceremony:
The ceremony was held at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington, DC.
Historical Significance:
The James Webb Space Telescope, as of 2022, is the most powerful telescope ever sent into space. Named after James E. Webb, NASA administrator from 1961 to 1968, the JWST was designed to succeed the renowned Hubble Space Telescope. The JWST offers significant improvements in resolution and imaging capabilities, enabling astronomers to study some of the oldest stars and galaxies in the universe from Earth.
While the Hubble Space Telescope observed objects in ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light, the JWST covers a lower frequency range, from long-wave visible (red) light to mid-infrared. The telescope features a distinctive kite-shaped sunshield that protects it from direct sunlight and indirect light from the Moon and Earth, maintaining the extremely cold temperature of 50 Kelvin (-370 oF) necessary for its operation. The JWST orbits the Sun at a distance of 930,000 miles from Earth.
Originally scheduled for launch in 2007, the JWST faced numerous delays due to various challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The successful launch in December 2021 marked the beginning of a new era in space observation and imaging, promising to unlock many secrets of the cosmos.
