4¢ Angel's Trumpets Forever Stamp 2026

The United States Postal Service has introduced a new four-cent definitive stamp series celebrating the captivating charm of angel’s trumpets, a flower admired for its dramatic appearance and unforgettable fragrance. Known for their oversized, trumpet-like blooms and sweet summer scent, these plants have long been cherished by gardeners and flower enthusiasts.

The stamp artwork is based on a unique photographic process created by photographer Harold Davis. Rather than relying on traditional flower photography methods, Davis illuminated the blossoms from behind using a light box and layered several exposures together to achieve a glowing, almost translucent visual effect. To enhance the composition, he incorporated a scanned image of weathered paper as a textured backdrop during the editing process, giving the final image a timeless and artistic quality.

Davis explains that his approach was intended to reveal the colors transmitted through the delicate petals rather than simply capturing the light reflected from their surface. This technique allows viewers to experience the flowers in a way that differs from conventional floral images, emphasizing their inner luminosity and fragile beauty.

When arranging the composition, Davis deliberately positioned the four blossoms so that they appeared to rise upward like musical instruments, even though angel’s trumpets naturally grow with their flowers facing downward. After experimenting with various arrangements, he realized that a downward-facing composition lacked visual impact. The plant’s name ultimately provided the inspiration for the final design.

“As soon as I thought about the fact that Brugmansia is commonly called angel’s trumpet, I recognized the opportunity to highlight that connection,” Davis explains. By arranging the flowers to resemble actual trumpets, he created a visual interpretation that reflected both the plant’s name and its distinctive form.

Although Davis grows angel’s trumpets in his own backyard, the flowers featured in the stamp were discovered in his neighborhood in Berkeley, California. His long-standing admiration for the plant comes from its extraordinary characteristics, including its enormous blossoms, unusual structure, and striking presence.

The 4¢ Angel’s Trumpet stamp continues the Postal Service’s collection of low-denomination floral stamps released in 2024, which includes designs featuring the Fringed Tulip (1¢), Daffodils (2¢), Peonies (3¢), Red Tulips (5¢), and Poppies and Coneflowers (10¢).

According to Davis, angel’s trumpet is a remarkable plant that thrives under suitable environmental conditions. Although it is no longer found growing naturally in the wild, its vigorous growth and spectacular flowers make it a particularly valuable and fascinating species to cultivate.

The stamp was designed by art director Ethel Kessler, who adapted Harold Davis’s existing floral photograph into the final stamp design.
