Ansel Adams Forever Stamp 2024

Renowned photographer Ansel Adams, born on February 20, 1902, in San Francisco, California, is celebrated for his iconic images of American landscapes. His photography not only captured the natural beauty of the wilderness but also played a significant role in promoting environmental preservation and conservation efforts.

As a child, Adams was energetic and loved exploring the outdoors. His curiosity about nature and his passion for music??nurtured by years of piano training??shaped his creative spirit. In 1916, while recovering from an illness, Adams discovered James Hutchings's book In the Heart of the Sierras, which inspired his first visit to Yosemite National Park. Equipped with a camera gifted by his parents, Adams was captivated by Yosemite??s majesty and began his photographic journey.

In 1919, Adams joined the Sierra Club, where he worked as a summer caretaker and trip photographer at Yosemite. He remained deeply connected to the club for the rest of his life, even serving on its board for 37 years. During this time, he honed his skills, participated in climbing expeditions, and grew his love for the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Adams??s photography career took off in the early 1920s. Initially influenced by pictorialism, a style that mimicked the softness of paintings, he soon embraced sharp focus and dramatic contrast, which became his hallmark. In 1927, Adams published Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras, a groundbreaking collection of 18 prints that cemented his reputation as a master of photography. This success opened doors to commercial assignments and allowed him to further refine his craft, leaving an enduring legacy in both art and conservation.
