Historical Significance:
Mary Edmonia Lewis (c. July 4, 1844 ?C September 17, 1907) was an African Native American sculptor and one of the few black female artists of her time. She was the first African American sculptor to gain widespread recognition. Throughout her life, she drew inspiration from her mixed heritage, which influenced her unique and powerful works.

Born in Greenbush, New York, Lewis spent her early years in various parts of the state. She attended preparatory school in Ohio with 29 other non-white students. In 1864, after facing numerous rejections from male sculptors, Lewis moved to Boston and began her career under the tutelage of Edward Augustus Brackett. That same year, she held her first exhibition, showcasing her talent and determination.

Seeking to further her skills and join a vibrant artistic community, Lewis relocated to Rome, Italy. There, she enjoyed greater freedom and significantly expanded her body of work, exploring themes related to her African American and Native American heritage. Her sculptures continue to inspire and resonate with people around the world.

This stamp not only celebrates Edmonia Lewis's artistic achievements but also highlights her role as a trailblazer for future generations of artists.
