Lunar New Year : Ox Forever Stamp 2021
Stamp Commemorating the Year of the Dragon
Issued to honor the fifth animal in the Chinese Zodiac, the dragon, this stamp marks the fifth installment in the Lunar New Year series, inaugurated in 2020.
Crafted to evoke the ornate masks adorning dragons and lions in Lunar New Year parades, the stamp's design, created by artist Camille Chew, draws inspiration from traditional paper-cut folk art. The sheet features illustrations of all 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, arranged in columns on the left and right sides.
A notable feature of the design is the foil stamping technique, enhancing the intricacies of the mask and lending it a captivating three-dimensional quality.
In light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the First Day of Issue Ceremony was conducted virtually, with the First Day of Issue Cancellation originating from Chicago, Illinois.
Part of an enduring tradition, the Lunar New Year Series by the USPS has a long history, spanning decades. Delving into the symbolism of the Chinese zodiac, the ox, or water buffalo, as it's often referred to, holds significance as the second animal in the Lunar New Year cycle. Paired with the element of metal, 2021 heralded the Year of the Metal Ox, commencing on February 12.
Beyond its astrological associations, the ox is aligned with specific hours of the day, falling between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. in Chinese tradition. In the celestial map of the Chinese zodiac, the ox resides within the northern mansions of the Black Tortoise constellation, as per ancient Chinese astronomers.
