Priority Mail Express : Cosmic Cliffs Forever Stamp 2024
Overview:
The 2024 Cosmic Cliffs stamp marks the first non-American Landmarks Series Express Mail stamp since 2008, featuring a breathtaking image captured by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.
Purpose of Issuance:
This stamp was issued to cover the Express Mail Rate and to celebrate the groundbreaking images captured by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which has revolutionized our understanding of the universe.
Stamp Design:
The stamp features a digitally enhanced image of deep space, showcasing mid-infrared light emitted by the Cosmic Cliffs. Red and yellow flares represent developing and newly born stars. The lower third of the image reveals swirling clouds of orange and brown dust and gas, while stars from the Milky Way and distant galaxies emerge in the blue and black regions above the nebula. This captivating image was created in collaboration with NASA, the European Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency, and the Space Telescope Science Institute.
First Day of Issue:
Although no official First Day of Issue Ceremony was held, the postmark for the stamp's release came from Greenbelt, Maryland' home to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, the facility responsible for coordinating the development of the JWST.
Historical Significance:
In 2024, the USPS introduced an Express Mail stamp featuring an image from the James Webb Space Telescope, specifically the "Cosmic Cliffs" in the Carina Nebula. Prior to the JWST's 2022 launch, observations of the Carina Nebula were obscured by cosmic dust. Thanks to the JWST's advanced infrared imaging capabilities, scientists were able to peer through this dust, revealing star formation in its earliest stages and unveiling the intricate structures resembling cliffs and valleys formed by ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from massive young stars.
The Cosmic Cliffs, named for their mountainous appearance, were previously invisible to ordinary visible light photography. The JWST's ability to capture protostellar jets from young stars provides an unprecedented view into the formation of stars. NASA anticipates that the JWST will address many of the significant unanswered questions in modern astrophysics.
