Drug Free USA Forever Stamp 2020
Promoting Drug Awareness with the Drug Free USA Forever Stamp
The USPS has unveiled a powerful symbol in the fight against drug abuse with the release of the Drug Free USA Forever stamp. Designed by artist Aaron Draplin, this striking stamp features a white star adorned with red, light blue, and blue lines emanating from each of its five points, symbolizing the unity required to combat drug use effectively.
Issued to raise awareness of the dangers posed by recreational drug use in the United States, this stamp serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of addressing this critical issue at all levels of society. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the USPS conducted a virtual First Day of Issue Ceremony, with the First Day of Issue Cancellation taking place in Washington, DC.
The history represented by this stamp traces back to the 1800s when addictive drugs first emerged as a significant concern in America. The establishment of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in 1973 marked a pivotal moment in the nation's efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse. Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who joined the DEA in 1975, exemplified the agency's commitment to tackling drug-related crime.
Camarena's courageous efforts led to the dismantling of the multi-billion-dollar Rancho Bufalo marijuana farm in Mexico, but tragically, his dedication cost him his life. His abduction, torture, and murder in 1985 sparked a nationwide movement against drugs, symbolized by the wearing of red ribbons in his honor. The Red Ribbon Campaign, initiated in 1988, continues to advocate for drug-free lifestyles and commemorates those who have made sacrifices in the fight against drugs.
Released during Red Ribbon week in 2020, the Drug Free USA Forever stamp serves as a powerful emblem of solidarity in the ongoing battle against substance abuse. By wearing a red ribbon during October, individuals pledge to live drug-free lives and pay tribute to the heroes who have devoted themselves to this noble cause.
